There are often associated physical effects of sleep apnea, including wear and tear on the teeth from grinding and clenching, as well as the effects on the tissues in the mouth. The most commonly recommended treatment for patients with sleep apnea is CPAP therapy (Continuous positive airway pressure). However, many patients find it hard to comply with this form of treatment because it is cumbersome to travel with, noisy, bulky, and uncomfortable to wear. As an alternative to those who suffer from mild to moderate sleep apnea, CORE Dental is pleased to offer oral appliance therapy treatment. Similar to nightguards, oral appliances that treat sleep apnea are small, custom-fit oral devices that securely fit over the upper and lower teeth. They work to reposition the lower jaw to open the airway and prevent the tongue and mandible from blocking the airway during sleep, thereby encouraging better oxygen delivery throughout the body. These oral appliances are small, convenient to carry when traveling, easy to wear, and much more comfortable than a CPAP machine. Most importantly, they are highly effective at treating sleep apnea.
Sleep apnea is a complex and serious medical problem. We recommend booking a consultation to discuss the options for treatment which will usually start with a sleep study.
